Rugby has had an encouraging and thriving year within the games department at Reading School. We have seen increased numbers in participation leading to the School being able to field B sides on Saturday morning at year 7, 8 and 9. The senior side have also seen an increase in numbers with over 40 boys in the sixth form regularly attending weekly training this meant being able to field a second XV. The junior teams have thrived in the county cup competitions with the year 7 team having a successful day at the county championship held at Bluecoat School; they eventually lost in the final of the second tier plate competition. Both the year 8 and year 10 side made it through to the county cup semi-finals but narrowly missed out on the finals, with both games being within one score. All in all it has been a very good term for rugby, all the pupils that have represented the School have done so with superb dedication, enthusiasm, confidence and we (as a games department) hope this continues and an enjoyment for rugby continues to grow.
Mr Steadman Don't forget that all of the results are available on the website - thanks is due to everyone who has supported Rugby at Reading School this year. The new term has arrived, and so has the start of the football season. Interest to be involved in Match Division teams has been high, so a staggering 15 teams will be competing over the next 12 weeks. A full list of fixtures are now available on the Calendar page - these are slowly being transferred to the main Fixtures page.

Yesterday evening celebrated the achievements of sportsmen at Reading School, with several boys being awarded sporting colours for their commitment and work with the Sports Department. A selection of larger prizes were handed out during the evening, including
The main award of the evening was for Reading School Sports Personality of the Year, voted by the students of Reading School. The top 3 for this prize were
Congratulations to everyone involved.
The Rugby season has come to an end. There are no more fixtures this term, although the U15s will have a Semi Final encounter with Pangbourne College in the County Cup after Christmas. All teams have produced some stunning performances, which could not have been possible without the commitment of both students and parents.
Next term, we have a record number of teams taking part in the Football season. For the majority of our teams, a successful season of rugby ends on Saturday with a block fixture against LVS Ascot, with the U16s and Senior sides ending their season next Wednesday with matches against Forest School.
However, for the U13A and U15 sides, there is still the possibility of a further triumph in the County Cup. The U15s will be playing Kennet School in Round 3 in the near future, whereas the U13s are looking forward to a Semi Final encounter against either Edgbarrow School or Charters School. More details about our Cup progress in both Rugby and Football can be found by hovering over the Fixtures button in the navigation bar and selecting the relevant link. The chart below provides a summary of our Rugby County Cup results this season: This year, Reading School Sports Personality is taking place on Wednesday 16th December. All students can vote using the survey, which can be found on Sharepoint.

Don't forget to place your vote! Today, our 1st V Basketball team played their first fixture this term against Leighton Park. Despite ultimately losing 56 - 36, it was a great experience for our new squad.
Our U12A and U12B played magnificently today in dreadful, rainy conditions in the Year 7 Rugby Festival at Reading Blue Coat School.
The U12As finished second in their group, winning three matches (5-0, 3-0 and 2-0 in tries) and losing one (3 tries to 0). They then went into the Trophy competition, winning 4-0 in the Quarter Final, 3-0 in the Semi Final and unfortunately losing to Claire's Court 2-1 on the Final. Meanwhile, the U12Bs finished third in their group, with two wins and two losses. They progressed into the knock out stages, but lost 1-0 to Slough and Eton, who ultimately won the Vase. Today was a hugely promising display of Year 7 rugby, with both the A and B teams making progress in the competition, which was contested by 40 local schools. Senior House Chess took place this evening. Here are the results:
This Thursday is the Year 7 annual Rugby County Festival. It is held at Reading Blue Coat School. This year, two teams are representing Reading School in the 10 a side competition. The festival begins at 10:00.
It has been extremely tough for Mr Allen to select the teams for the festival, particularly as it is a 10 a side event, not a 12 a side event.
Good Luck to everyone taking part! Mr Allen has written a full, detailed match report of our latest victory in the Football National Cup:
The 3rd round of the National Cup had been postponed from Monday until Friday due to fog in High Wycombe so the anticipation for the squad had been building all week. After the thrilling but somewhat unexpected victory over Bradfield College the team were full of confidence but being careful not to be complacent going into the big game against an undefeated opposition in John Hampden Grammar School. In treacherous conditions of rain and wind the game got underway with a fast pace but it would be difficult to play much passing and technical football. Reading knew that this could possibly benefit their direct style of play. With an early corner driven low into the near post by Maxim Wallace, Matt Rawlinson managed to get on the end of it and toe poke the ball into the bottom corner to break the deadlock. This was just the start Reading needed but they were well aware of the onslaught to come. Reading had to soak up a huge amount of pressure for the remainder of the first half but with superb tackling from the likes of Alex Jenkins, Josh Smith and Oliver Overend at the back marshalled by captain Tom Stasburger, managed to keep the opposition at bay. Communication is a key area that the Reading team are focusing on to improve and the captain was setting the tone. The defensive midfielders Rowan Smith, Jonny Halbert and George Malone were rotated to make the most of their fitness and avoid bookings due to the ferociousness of their tackling. This added extra protection for the back four would definitely be needed. A combination of Rowan Smith and Oliver Overend somehow managed to clear the ball off the line, Jonny Purcell in goal was again ever reliable when called upon and George Malone had to be taken off to avoid being sent off after receiving a yellow card for a very late challenge. These were all signs of the intense pressure Reading were having to soak up but they were holding firm. When the opportunity to hit the opposition on the break came Reading took their chance. Josh Valentin, Mark Spruyt and Joe Wilson had the ability to cause problems and looked impressive going forward. Maxim Wallace would again supply the assist but this time from a throw in that Sam Steventon volleyed directly into the net to shock the opposition. The work rate of Elliot Stone was an example to all in defending from the front and this optimised the whole team performance. Reading managed to hold on to the 2-0 scoreline and progress to the next round in a performance to be proud of. Our Lacrosse team has lost 7 - 1 to the International School of Brussels in a performance that showed lots of potential for the future.
Congratulations to our Football 1st XI squad, which has beaten John Hampden Grammar School 2 - 0 in Round 3 of the National Cup! Both the Match Report and the draw for Round 4 will become available on Monday.
This win is particularly impressive because it means that the team has progressed further in this competition than any other Reading School side since interactive records began back in 2009. After school today marked the first of three House Chess competitions taking place over the next few months.
The result of the Colts competition (Years 9 and 10) was 1st -- East House (9 points) 2nd -- School House (7.5 points) 3rd -- West House (6.5 points) 4th -- County House (1 point) We would love as many students and parents as possible to become a part of the Reading School Sport website.
If you have a match report or picture that you would like to submit, then please fill out the response form on the Homepage of this website. The last week of half term proved to be an outstanding showcase of sport. In Rugby, the 1st XV played Desborough College and the U15s won against Easthampstead School. Meanwhile, West and East House took equal 1st place in the Year 7 House Table Tennis.
The main event of the week though was House Basketball. All 6 House Basketball contests took place, with County House securing four victories. East House and County House each took one victory. Having started the school year already over 20 points behind County, West House needed a strong performance in Basketball to close the gap - however, they finished the week without a win. After a confident 45 - 7 victory last Thursday against Upton Court Grammar in the National Vase, the U15s faced Easthampstead School today in the second round of the County Cup. In a thrilling contest which saw Reading dominate throughout, the team won superbly 48 - 5 to bring an end to a thrilling Half Term of Rugby.
Although the rugby action is taking a break next week during half term, tomorrow is set to be a crucial day in terms of the House Cup, with the Year 8s and Seniors competing in House Basketball. Our U16A and U16B Lacrosse teams took part in the Lacrosse Holder Trophy in London today. Both teams reached the Semi Finals and finished 3rd and 4th.
The last week of the term is set to be huge in the context of the House Cup, with seven sport competitions taking place in the Gym. All six House Basketball competitions are taking place, with our new Year 7s being treated to both House Basketball and House Table Tennis in the space of three hours on Monday.
County House are looking to continue with their success in the House Cup last year, and that plan has started perfectly with 1st place in Year 8 House Table Tennis. However, will County be able to maintain a 100% record next week, with Year 7 House Table Tennis and House Basketball for all year groups?
School House took 2nd place, East took 3rd and West took 4th. Our Table Tennis tables have now been fixed, which means that the House Cup returns tomorrow with Year 8 House Table Tennis after school in the gym, from 15:30 until 17:00. There must be four players in each team - white kit and indoor trainers are required to compete.
With House Table Tennis and House Basketball competitions taking place in the next few weeks, the gym will be available at Break times for House practices and trials. However, these must be arranged in advance and supervised by a member of staff. Although school uniform may be worn, boys must wear indoor trainers. This morning four teams took to the rugby field against Holyport College. The results were as follows:
The table below shows how well our teams are doing - please note that all results, including cup matches, have been taken in account.
Our football 1st XI team put together a monumental performance today in the third round of the National Cup, winning 2 - 1. As soon as the draw was made, Reading knew that it was going to be an extremely difficult match, playing away at Bradfield College, last year's Semi Finalists. The draw for the next round is made on Monday.
House Competitions commence tomorrow with Year 9 House Table Tennis. All Table Tennis competitions will start promptly at 15:30 in the gym and each team will need four players.
